2017 Brecon Zinfandel/Tannat

2014 Brecon Tannat

Consider this then our third generation Zin/Tannat or ZN/TN 3.0. We would contend the third generation did not in fact lose this family jewel! It has a certain familiarity to the ‘14 and ‘16, but has brighter fruit reflecting the higher proportion of underlying Calcareous soils. Indeed we have narrowed the fruit sourcing down from Central Coast to Westside Paso Robles. The nose is so much more lifted and evocative, even somewhat giddy. This is a moreish, structured wine, enjoyed with much abandon.

Production notes

Tannat is frequently hidden in Zin at 3-4%, here it’s an unabashed 50%. Smells and tastes like the full bodied, spicy old vine Zin, with a rather distinguished backbone. Indeed we have to press out the Tannat early to ensure the Tannins are not overly dominant in the blend.

Seemingly it’s a rare locale that ripens Tannat to perfection (think Uruguay, Paso, and Madiran.) Combine this with the hilltop nature of all the component vineyards and this translates to truly ripe fruit. Not a green or white pepper note to be found. All vineyards are headtrained; each component is distinctly different, bringing nuances to the blend. Some clones for example, exhibit a softer, more feminine touch to what is traditionally perceived as a very masculine grape variety.
