Here, the oldest Cab Sauv in Paso (Brecon) has somehow hooked up with one of the youngest hill top Cabs (Hawkshill). This is in fact a very appropriate relationship in wine terms as the older Cab provides a broad spectrum of flavors and just oozes sophistication. Young vines are known for their more focused, tiny, flavor-packed berries and often foreshadow how good a vineyard will be in ten to fifteen years time. The combination gives the best of both worlds; brightness, structure, ageability, complexity, and of course Brecon’s signature mouthfeel. Even the oak framework is multi-layered and suitably intriguing.

Production notes

Old-vine Cabernet truly needs a skilled hand. Less experienced winemakers might try to over oak or extract while missing the whole point of a perfectly balanced expression of sensuous maturity. Sure we do add a little Petit Verdot and young vine Cab. For us it’s akin to slipping granny some Prozac to get the venerable old lady dancing on the table at her granddaughter's wedding. The older vines absolutely still shine through but have a wicked twinkle in their eye.

We understand the Brecon vineyard was the third or forth Cabernet vineyard planted in Paso Robles. About 15 acres are still standing strong (amazing since they were planted on their own roots) whereas their slightly older brethren have long since succumbed to a rather large bulldozer and  the pressure to replant. For us the economics are unimportant, we have a special duty of care to elucidate the special qualities of old vine Cabernet planted on calcareous bedrock topped with Linne Calodo clay.
