2016 Brecon Feral Underclass
Coined in 2011 by the Right Honorable British Justice Secretary during civil unrest in the UK. The term went viral. Brecon loves how it rolls off the tongue and of course imagines its wine a tad on the riotous side! It all kind of fits, as we use two varieties traditionally excluded from the nobel variety club. Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. When properly nurtured in Paso Robles they can truly be world class. We finally put one proverbial finger up at the conventions of a class system by bottling it in our single vineyard reserve program. By the way, it’s a big structured cooler climate Petite Sirah/Zinfandel blend with bags of character and layers of hidden pepper and spice.

Production notes
We let the yeast run amok. Starting with a cool soak and just a little wild fermentation before hitting it with a natural yeast selected from an iconic California Petite Sirah vineyard. There must be a real party going on in there as the purple foam atop the tank is something to behold. We then stain our lovely new 70 gallon barrels when filling them with this purple froth (Well, 40% of them are new anyway). Hide it away for 18 months before briefly blending it in a tank prior to bottling.

Rolph vineyard is a superlative dry grown vineyard, above Adelaida Road, run by a detail oriented statistician. Brecon was so impressed by the Petite Sirah on this property that we negotiated to graft over some Port varietals to Petite just so we could actually get some. To sweeten the deal, we agreed to take a little Zinfandel which adds the spice to this wines structure and jamminess.
