2021 Brecon Albarino

Benjamin Franklin once said “The discovery of a wine is of greater moment than the discovery of a constellation. The universe is too full of stars.” Well, finding this Albariño (and sometimes it's really really hard to find) can be one of those moments, judging by its previous accolades that is. A pure expression of the varietal that started Brecon on its wildly successful Albariño ride. Aromatics veritably jump from the glass with hints of Sauvignon Blanc and day lily blossom (that edible flower). Being varietally true it's all citreen, with crisp fresh limes dominating the palate. So refreshing, yet the finish is surprisingly rich with a softness and biscuity toastiness, reminiscent of a classic champagne.

Production notes

Albariño is one of the crisper aromatic varieties. We do all we can to capture these aromatics with long, slow, icy cold ferments. Our yeast choice is vital and the light fluffy lees component remains in the tank until the last minute. This enables us to stir these lees biweekly giving a rich, toasty and shortbread-like blending component that further complements the mouthwatering acidity.

This will be the last bottling under the Central Coast Appellation. Next year it will be bottled under the recently approved SLO Coast moniker. This better reflects how close Brecon’s chosen Albariño vineyards are to the crashing waves of the Pacific. You can even catch a few waves during your lunch break.  Interestingly, the best European Albariño’s are also grown close to the coast in their native Spain and Portugal. The “SLO Coast” vineyards Brecon sources from average is a mere 1.9  miles inland and have a uniquely intense flavor profile. One could speculate that this derives from the seemingly endless growing season because the marine fogs cool the grapes daily.
