2022 Brecon Last Sandwich
We love names that mean something to us personally. The Last Sandwich is a doff of the caving helmet to some impressive discoveries made in Ogof (Welsh for cave) Draenen that our founding winemaker was involved in. Apparently, they were literally sitting down to devour their last sandwich, when they spied an unseen way on. Ironically, this blend came about in much the same way. They had tried blending both this particular rich oily Viognier and crisp refreshing Albarino every which way with other varietals. Finally hitting upon blending them together while fighting over the last chicken tikka panini. Which, as you might expect, paired delightfully.
Production notes
With fruit this good we can keep the heavy hand of oak at arm's length. Albariño is one of the crisper varieties and a stainless regime really lets the refreshing citrus characters shine through. We also do all we can to capture both the Viognier and Albarino’s aromatics with long slow almost icy-cold ferments. Consequently, our yeast choice is vital.

Don’t be confused by the Central Coast appellation on the label. “SLO Coast” is the source of our Albarino. We should have, could have, put it on the label. Think salty sea breezes and sand dunes! The coastal fogs are very much in evidence, cooling the crop and radically extending the growing season. We sometimes harvested it in November. Its blending buddy is La Vista Vineyards sun-drenched Viognier in the Adelaida sub distract. In essence the best of both sun and surf.
