2021 Brecon Budgie Smuggler (New Release!)
Brecon’s “Operation Renegade.” Our rebel without a cause winemaker secretly conceived a Cabernet, Tempranillo, and Petit Verdot blend. The delicious result is reminiscent of a complex, cigar box, leathery, Northern Spanish red, although we suspect this may not have exactly been the initial intent as things got remarkably raucous at the final blending. Thus we ended up with eight individual varieties in the mix. Interesting factoid, the Justice dept’s “Special Operation Renegade” aimed to cut down on the importation of exotic birds. Australia's Prime Minister, Tony Abbot, also championed the cause!
Production notes
Fortuitously, we neglected to get our ducks in a row on the Tempranillo. Never picking quite enough to make a straight varietal wine. Consequently, knowing we had to blend from the start, we put the three core varieties together quickly, only tinkering with the blend as bottling approached.

All are Calcareous vineyards either in the Templeton Gap or Adelaida sub districts. All are above 1200’ and to be consistent with the avian theme of this tech sheet, most have suitable bird netting, low flying raptors, or other bird scaring devices. Just to ensure the fruit is undamaged before it heads to the winery.
