2016 Brecon Albarino

Brits are best known for the Barmy Army, Monty Python, Mad dogs and Englishmen. Hummmm seems to be a trend here. So it was no surprise that Brecon was initially considered Barking Mad for hanging their hats on an Albarino as one of their signature wines. After scoring 96 points twice in two days in 2015. The method to their madness has become quite clear.

Even in Portugal/Northern Spain the best examples of these wonderfully crisp yet aromatic food wines come from within a couple of miles of the coast. In California, marine fogs cool the grapes, resulting in a long ripening period, super intense flavors and aromatics. The tropical complexity/richness was so intense in 2016 we deftly melded in around 10% Albariño from other ranches to ensure the varietally correct citrine characters were suitably enhanced.

2016 Brecon Cabernet / Petite Sirah

Bright and lively with upfront forest fruits and a pretty damn intense mid palate. This is an  intriguing, multilayered wine with a soft chalky finish. Those terribly nice Swedish folk just loved this rich style. We know, we previously sold it to them! Something to cuddle up too with a marmalade sandwich in hand when those icy baltic winds are howling through the Ikea parking lot.

2016 Brecon Cabernet Franc

This wine is perfect for the “dreamer who can only find his way by moonlight”. I think we just went all Oscar Wilde on you. Perhaps it's those deep mysterious hues that shine under flickering candlelight or reflections reminiscent of a millpond on a blood moon. Either way remember “the dreamers punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest”.

2016 Brecon Feral Underclass

Coined in 2011 by the Right Honorable British Justice Secretary during civil unrest in the UK. The term went viral. Brecon loves how it rolls off the tongue and of course imagines its wine a tad on the riotous side! It all kind of fits, as we use two varieties traditionally excluded from the nobel variety club. Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. When properly nurtured in Paso Robles they can truly be world class.  We finally put one proverbial finger up at the conventions of a class system by bottling it in our single vineyard reserve program. By the way, it’s a big structured cooler climate Petite Sirah/Zinfandel blend with bags of character and layers of hidden pepper and spice.

2016 Brecon Forty-Two (Red Rhone Blend)

Perhaps you noticed Elon’s Tesla floating around in space has “Don’t Panic” Written on the steering wheel. Like our “42” this is inspired by the “Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.” Making it a wine with the answer to the ultimate question, life, the universe and everything!  While I don’t think we will be launching a Brecon into space any time soon we do reach for the stars with this blend (Groan). Soft, velvety smooth, intriguing mix of flavors and a stunning length.

2016 Brecon Grenache Adelaida

It's so hard blending in the gloom of January. For Grenache, your grey matter really needs to be full of long heady summer evenings, picking fresh strawberries and raspberries while prancing gayly through an alpine meadow ala the Sound of Music. Perhaps we should do our blending in a florist or a jam factory next time!

This the only style of red wine where we try to encapsulate those summer fruit impressions/aromatics. By using a complete oxygen barrier/seal, such that, it  “lets flavor flood out” as you pour into your glass. Our winemaking reflects this ethos by being as complex as possible without losing those primary fermentation characters.

2016 Brecon Grenache Blanc

Wrote this in more of a “captain sensible” kind of day so here goes. The majority (~72%) of this Grenache Blanc is sourced from head trained vines. This is, in itself, somewhat unusual/special, particularly in the veritable wind tunnel of the Templeton Gap. The balance abuts Hoffman Mountain Ranch (Paso’s oldest Pinot 1964). It was a somewhat gritty wine when young, hence released post summer, but like the proverbial ugly duckling this wine has blossomed into something quite………….

2016 Brecon Meritage

Heard the expression “you can never go back”. Well, you can completely throw that one out the top floor window with this sassy Meritage. The integration is seamless, as with any true Meritage, but the cheeky interplay of the four key varietals changes over time. You identify different nuances and are ultimately left pondering the exact varietal makeup of the blend. This audacious medley is perhaps our least traditional Meritage varietally. Yet still produces our signature blend of dark forest fruits, super smooth yet complex tannins, and great balancing acidity.

2016 Brecon Mourvedre Adelaida

Would you believe the sixteen month absence of Mourvedre from the Brecon lineup has been described as the pain of unrequited love! “La douleur exquise”... The exquisite pain or the heartache of wanting something you can’t have. Indeed we skipped a vintage in 2015, as what little Mourvedre we had in went into our red Rhone blend program. Signature naturally sweet forest fruit characters, smooth but with excellent length. In fact it’s a fully ripe hilltop Mourvedre overlain with a framework of complex smoky and earthy notes found only in 1st class examples.

"The 2016 Mourvèdre also was brought up in a mix of French and American oak, one-third being new. It offers terrific purity of fruit and freshness as well as classic notes of bright cherries, red plums, flowers, and underbrush aromas and flavors. It has fine tannins and is a seamless, approachable Mourvèdre that should keep for 7-8 years."

2016 Brecon Petite Sirah

A rugged, refined, rakish anti hero. A recurring dream about that fantasy masculine mountain man or perhaps caveman in your life.

“The Rakish man is socially masculine. He influences individual people by means of his attitude, his charisma, and his disdain for following the rules of society and not being beholden to other men. He is the playboy, the rock star, the outlaw, the vigilante and, of course, the Petite Sirah”

2016 Brecon Reserve Syrah

We have crafted single vineyard syrah offerings before and even won a “best Syrah in the new world award”. But until this release our picky winemaker has never bottled a Reserve Syrah, it’s complexity is what really sets it apart as being something special and unique. Three component vineyards and therefore differing aspects, trellising systems, clones, soils and harvest dates add layers of complexity even before we put it in a myriad of oak options.

2016 Brecon Syrah Adelaida Glenrose

We’ve gone all single vineyard on you with our latest offering. Glenrose has been the core of our Syrah since 2012 due to its signature smooth mouthfeel and opulent, almost meaty, fruit. In 2016 we finally crowbarred enough fruit out of its venerable custodian, a certain young mister Rose, to offer it in its own right. Yet, there is more! A meer smidgen of a hidden heritage varietal (Tannat 6.9%) adds length and complexity in  the perception of tannins.

“The nose is a rich, expressive prune plum, florals and spice box, candied cherry and dark chocolate liqueur. The palate is spiced plum, caramelized stone fruit, espresso in a silky core finishing with tobacco, cola and prune. An out-sized wine with a dense Madeira personality. I could see this with a Cohiba at the end of a summer meal on the deck at sundown.”

2016 Brecon True Acacia Head Albarino

A single vineyard Albarino in disguise, (Read we forgot to put it in on the label). Actually consists of two of the three available clones from the oldest serious planting of Albarino. (Jack Ranch) in the Edna valley.  Those pesky little winemakers at Brecon, ferment exclusively in Oak barrels with Acacia heads. Acacia can enhance floral notes and structure without adding vanilla the toasty notes associated with a Quercus species. Think white peach overtones with an underlying Zesty grapefruit. 100% Albarino, 100% 2016, 95% Jack Ranch, 5% Derby Vyd.

By the way, there are around 800 known species of true acacia. The Acacia used in barrels is not one of them. We just liked the name.

2016 Brecon Viognier/Grenache Blanc

This simple 50/50 blend wholly from Adelaida belies the three vineyard and multiple cooperage complexity in this wine. Derived from two super aromatic sundrenched blocks, plus a later ripening more shaded block. Which gives it a lighter fresher more approachable side. In time expect stone fruit flavors to dominate, such as nectarines and peaches, while clean citrus characters shine through on the finish.

2016 Brecon Zinfandel

One for the ecologically minded foodies, AKA “eco-gluttons”. Now that's an interesting new term for us but really quite fits this enticing offering. Our hedonistic style makes the consummate food wine and strangely satisfies even the most fervent cult Zin head. Everything you would expect: organic/sustainable credentials, dry-grown hilltop vineyards, opulent jammy fruit, toasty oak, underlying black & white pepper. A wine for multiple feasts/occasions and not just for your, undoubtedly lovely, “paleo-vegan” best buds.

2016 Brecon Zinfandel/Tannat

Our inaugural Zin/Tannat in 2014 certainly represented a path less traveled. Or, from a blending perspective, a road rarely taken. Conceived as a “one-off” for the wine club, it has proved remarkably popular and somewhat difficult to replicate. Consider this then a next generation Zin/Tannat or ZN/TN 2.0. It has a certain familiarity to the rich jammy 2014 but with better integration and a whole raft of added features. More spice from the Zin and absolutely fantastic length that lingers oh so long. Very approachable or, keeping the tech analogy, one might say plug in and play, play, play!
