Tisk Tisk. I got caught purple handed copying a previous tasting note. Well if it's not broken don’t fix it, right? This egregious misdeed is not unlike how we gratuitously plagiarized the technique for crafting this lovely drop. You see, since the time of Asterix the Gaul and Julius Caesar, the fine folk of Cahors have been making delicious Malbec. That's why plucky little Brecon decided not to reinvent the chariot wheel, and mimic their wine's makeup, i.e. sneak in a sizable chunk of Tannat. Hence, the bags of bright Malbec fruit with its lovely acid balance and certain softness of texture are reinforced with a solid Tannat backbone. All of this is overlain with fine French oak that imparts cinnamon/nutmeg overtones with hints of vanilla candies. Sorry, not available in Amphoras.

This is somewhat outside our usual wheelhouse. Primarily because the only Merlot we have ever had “a crush on”, from a ripeness perspective in our rarified locality, can best be described as just half a hilltop block. How our winemaker (5’8”) strong-armed the grower (6’6”) to only pick what we call “Diagon Alley” (diagonally) across the block, I will never know! This strip aligns with a band of calcareous bedrock and provides a distinctive fruit quality that is ripe, bright, elegant, and the perfect balancing match to our historic old vine crooner of a Cabernet vineyard. Needless to say, the grower has resisted in subsequent years. Perhaps I need to play cupid and smack him over the head with a bottle (rhetorically speaking, btw) so he truly understands such matchmaking.

Welcome to the realm of the path less traveled. We, and our little Lord Farquaad, have only been this way in 14,16,17, and 21. Originally conceived as a “one-off” for the demanding wine club, it has proved remarkably popular and somewhat fiddly to replicate. Diving into the mind of our winemaker, beyond the cobwebs and British punk music, we have no idea what the trigger is to bring the coveted Zin/Tannat recipe from the darkest reaches of his grey matter. Elegant spice and opulent fruit from the Zin, richness and body from Tannat, fantastic length that lingers! And a brightness of character born in the hills.

Cabernet does not have to be a stereotypical brutish fullback in an oaken cigar box to be world-class. Rather, older vines, such as these, can have an elegance, complexity, and a sophistication that far outweighs the best youth team. Stereotypes are something us Welsh Winemakers are rather too familiar with. It alludes us as to why popular belief portrays us as hill-dwelling Celtic barbarians who can hold a tune. Few are proficient at rugby, and not everyone shares the surname Jones. Anyway, when not on our soapboxes! To complement the wine's complexity, we have found the restrained use of fine-grain French oak coopered in the iconic Cognac region serves best. Why this unusual barrel in particular? Why does it share its name with a legendary Jamaican rastafarian? Both answers completely elude us!

By no means your average tutti-frutti rosé. These vines have some serious life experience, having lived through several decades, two different centuries, and two different millennia before finally finding their true calling. A refreshing white cherry and berry medley, this dry, Bordeaux-inspired rosé is oh-so seductive, with a sophisticated “old crooner” touch that comes directly from historic old Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Perhaps you really can teach an old vine to mellow with time. Sit by the pool, relax, watch the world fly by, the paint dry, and the grass grow. Enjoy!

Tiny serendipitous moments made this a wonderful offering. Like pressing late as you had run out of tank space and using the Tango Malbec yeast as its all that was left on the shelf. We really did throw out the Winemaking book of not entirely useful advice. BTW Said book is penned by upstanding members of the Leguminati. Secret handshakes and all that. So understandably all our reds are Vegan friendly. And yes, every year our Meritage blend differs which makes our wine lively, integrated, and organoleptically interesting. Like a mad scientist, mixing components to balance acid, flavor, tannin and oak, our winemaker has done it again!

Wallace and Gromit’s “The Wrong Trousers,” alas, was not the humorous inspiration for the name. It’s actually based on some impressive discoveries made in a Welsh cave that our founding winemaker was involved in. Apparently, they were quite literally sitting down to munch on their last sandwich when they spied an unseen way forward. Ironically, this blend came about in much the same way. He had tried blending this particular rich, oily Viognier and crisp, refreshing Albariño every which way with other varietals, but finally hit upon blending them together while fighting over the last chicken tikka panini, which, as you might expect, paired delightfully well.

Conceived as a low input summer sipping red, i.e. we put it in a barrel and just kind of “send it to Coventry”- a British term to ignore or shun, only really understood if you have actually been to Coventry. Despite ostracization this wine somehow became a skilled polyglot. It not only seems to understand the language of love, but also that of enigmatic color and alluring hues. Judging by its complex berry and floral nose it is also fluent in the secret language of flowers and the somewhat obscure Peruvian fruit language (don’t ask). Granted we were expecting some Welsh (a very lyrical language) as our winemaker frequently mumbles it, but at least  it understands the peculiar language of my wallet!

Six degrees of separation is how we connect any two people on the planet. But with three degrees of separation, i.e. an ex-friend of a true friend of a friend, everyone should know a Nora, and a rude one at that. But seriously, the name derives from the most essential bit of kit any self-respecting underground explorer must have: their light. Rude Nora lamps are the light of choice for European international cave explorers. Many remote discoveries have been made with Rude Noras, including some by our founding winemaker (who regularly uses one in our cellar, by the way). They are very, very bright, well made, super robust, monkey-proof, and built to last a long, long time. Not unlike this particular in-your-face Cabernet/Petite Sirah-based blend. Like many a Brecon blend, it also rolls off the tongue particularly well.

We craft these inky little monsters to outlast the median age profile of recipients of the fabled Darwin Awards (mid-20s)! By implication then, we are only catering to “higher functioning primates”, i.e., those with greater cognitive flexibility who will delight in the deep purple hues and silky multi-layered textures. Perhaps those who can discern the individual forest fruits and hints of fresh-cut violets. They might even cherish the complexities of a toasty oak profile formed somewhere in the “spaghetti junction” between multiple French micro-cooperages. It is, of course, not lost on us that both bonobos and mountain gorillas also fall into that higher simian bucket!

Of the three types of déjà vu, we got you covered on at least two; déjà vécu (already experienced) and déjà senti (already felt). Mourvèdre, by the way, has been the backbone of many collectible Rhône wines for centuries. That's why it always has that certain familiarity. In Paso, it also shines with dark enigmatic fruit, rich mouthfeel and beguiling color, as well as more customary warmth and earthy forest floor aromatics. Consequently at Brecon we put it front and center on the label, whereas in its native France it’s just not done! Interestingly, occasional déjà vu is very common and not a cause for concern. However, perhaps you should consider speaking with a neurologist if you experience déjà vu frequently (e.g., multiple times a day)!

This wine honors a Major Milestone and perhaps is a nod to how time flies. It really has been ten crazy years since we purchased what is now Brecon Estate. Along the way we tried to take a path less traveled, picking up a somewhat colorful inner circle and rather unconventional influences. This special wine aims to reflect all this and improve on our ever popular “42” Rhone Blend, “the answer to life, the universe and everything.” A little more color, structure and silkiness, perhaps thanks to the addition of some tiny-berried Petite Sirah baby vines. Best saved for a special occasion or large family gathering.
