2023 Brecon Shiraz /Cabernet Sauvignon (New Release)
Have you noticed the young whippersnappers don't wear wrist watches these days? Probably as they only have a single function and don't really fit into their smart world. Brecon recognises that things change, and as such, creates multifaceted wines to fit the times. Even our single varietals are rarely 100%. So in this classic blend we not only doff the hat to the genius winemakers who first created this peppery and structured blend, but to long lost cultures who “tamed the untamable” and domesticated these varieties. All so our current generations of “sophisticated” palates can enjoy with dishes such as a biodynamic meaty bollonaise or grass-fed highland roast tofu. P.S our over-educated boomer (just) winemaker has not worn a watch in 40 years! Time just flies when you are having fun!
Production notes
Consider this a prelude to our own 100% Estate Shiraz/Cab. The Cab is of course from our own historic old-vine vineyard. We have planted Shiraz and eagerly awaited the first decent crop in 2024. The old vines tend to have unmatched complexity but may not be as dominant in the fruit and tannin department as some of the younger clones. So picking the right complementary peppery Shiraz at the correct time and blending at the correct percentage is a true winemaking skill. Early co-mingling to ensure seamless integration is part of that. However expect some minor changes in the future as we transition to our own fruit.

The Brecon Vineyard (now Certified Historic) is essentially as close to the cooling Pacific Ocean as you can get while still being on the main block of Calcareous Bedrock in Paso Robles. LaVista and Glenrose are also local Calcareous hilltop vineyards and have been a big part of our Rhone program, being the backbone of our famed Haggis Basher and Feral Underclass offerings.
