2017 Brecon Cabernet Franc

Fronk as it is affectionately known to its friends also suffers from such blatant stereotyping but of a more sexual nature. Indeed it is hard to find asexual descriptors particularly in French, no surprise there I suppose! Fully ripe examples, as we have here, are considered to have a lovely lightness of touch, be subtly fragrant and gently flirtatious; softer than the more masculine Cabernet Sauvignon. Strangely it still pairs remarkably well with a tender juicy steak particularly on heady summer evenings.

2017 Brecon Cabernet/Malbec

Trying hard to work the Anglo-Saxon, rather brooding phrase, “Malbecian Hoard” into the tasting note but apparently it's not in the latest Webster's Dic. Perhaps someone has been mainlining too much G.O.T or craving their own secret Hobbit hole. That aside, this is a bright exciting clone of Malbec, Just imported into the USA. We combine it with our “ye olde vine” Cabernet. Not I might add, the stuff of Arthurian legend, but pretty wizened. It creates something really quite smooth, surprisingly complex and with that signature Malbecian fruit brightness shining through.

2017 Brecon Syrah/Tannat

Strangely a “Furlong Firkin Fortnight” is pretty close to a case of wine! This humorous, nerdy system based on old fashioned impractical units illustrates the difficulty in finding suitable language to describe this little beauty. It is probably best to think of it as a Crossfit Syrah. There is a certain firmness of tone, a more solid well kept frame if you like. A definite inner confidence, head held high kind of wine that comes from a little maturity and a defined six pack.

2017 Brecon Cabernet/Petit Verdot

When in barrel, the most apt descriptor I heard was- to quote a rather loud bonnie lass, “it’s a weee little beastie that”. Strangely that’s exactly what we strived for in a young bordeaux. However I suspect we will need to give this 8-9 months bottle age prior to release to get this supple enough for those Southern Softie Sassenachs that occasionally frequent these parts. Now don’t get me wrong, with the underlying smoothness of 50% “ye olde vine” Brecon Cabernet and the opulent dark forest fruit from the Petit Verdot. We suspect this will meld into something remarkably long lived.

2017 Brecon Zinfandel/Tannat

Consider this then our third generation Zin/Tannat or ZN/TN 3.0. We would contend the third generation did not in fact lose this family jewel! It has a certain familiarity to the ‘14 and ‘16, but has brighter fruit reflecting the higher proportion of underlying Calcareous soils. Indeed we have narrowed the fruit sourcing down from Central Coast to Westside Paso Robles. The nose is so much more lifted and evocative, even somewhat giddy. This is a moreish, structured wine, enjoyed with much abandon.

2018 Brecon Grenache Adelaida (NEW)

"Oakley Doaky. Stop your lollygagging and get your laughing gear round this liddle beauty". Apologies, our winemaker often needs a translator between his native Queen's English and the  apparently bar stewardised US version! I suspect what he is trying to politely say is stop hanging about and taste this little gem. It has a fantastic smoaky oaky framework. Laughing gear is apparently a common colloquialism for mouth in the UK. Perhaps you worked that out already. Ironically it's best served at a very tepid British summer temperature, let's say a generous mid 60's. Over this side of the pond it's the perfect accompaniment for that quintessentially American Thanksgiving bird. We suspect the Queen would be rather unamused.

2017 Brecon Feral Underclass

Coined during some civil unrest and was one of the first terms in the UK to go viral. Brecon loves how it rolls off the tongue and of course imagines its wine a tad on the riotous side! It all kind of fits, as we use two varieties traditionally excluded from the nobel variety club. Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. When properly nurtured in Paso Robles they can truly be world class.  We finally put one proverbial finger up at the conventions of a class system by bottling it in our single vineyard reserve program. By the way, it’s a big structured cooler climate Petite Sirah/Zinfandel blend with bags of character and layers of hidden pepper and spice. BTW none of our team was involved in said riots!

2018 Brecon Mourvedre Adelaida (New Realease)

Some folks see patterns in random or unrelated numbers and dates, It's a form of apophenia. If by chance you are such a person perhaps you could explain the following pattern of our Mourvedre vintages as we are somewhat flummoxed.  2013, 2014, 2016 and now 2018!. All have a signature naturally sweet forest fruit character, velvety smooth but with excellent length. 1st class examples, from these parts typically have a high proportion of hill top fruit overlain with a framework of complex smoky and earthy notes. Ours for the first time is a 100% Single Vineyard Hilltop offering. It just does not say so on the label. Dang.. I suppose schrodingers cat is truly out the bag now.

2017 Brecon Forty-Two (Red Rhone Blend)

Sooooo if your tasting partner got Petunias on the nose! Be warned they might, just perhaps, be on the OCD spectrum. Curiously the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, from which this 42 gets inspiration.  Raises to sentient status a certain bowl of Petunias stating “Oh no, not again” as it falls planetward! Of course your tasting partner can recite that verbatim. Soft, velvety smooth, perhaps like a Petunia petal, this has an intriguing mix of both forest fruit aromas and flavors as well as having a stunning length for a Rhone Style wine.

2019 Brecon Viognier (NEW)

A wine to illustrate that from time to time when the galactic alignment is conducive, the moon is in the correct quarter, fish are jumping and the cotton is high. That a wine is so balanced and varietally correct that Brecon just has to bottle it pure. Nothing added, nothing taken away so to speak. This is quintessentially what a coastaly influenced viognier should smell like on the nose. A mere hint of  tropical notes adding to the complexity. La Vista Vineyard is a sun drenched south facing slope after all.

Perfect for summertime when the livin is easy, oh and best paired with an outdoor chaise lounge.

2017 Brecon Meritage

We suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Brecon has actually had to go all inky dark on you regarding our vineyard sourcing. Our English winemaker is feeling “A little miffed” bordering on “It’s a bit pesky” due to a spate of attempted vineyard contract thefts. BTW, the last time the British collectively had such a feeling was in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out during the blitz. Either way the majority of grapes are from Brecon old vines. Meaning it has our signature broad spectrum of flavors including, ironically, a subtle hint of Assam from the Cab Franc. The forest and earthy aroma interplay between varietals is very nuanced again a Brecon Meritage hallmark.

2017 Brecon Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

Here, the oldest Cab Sauv in Paso (Brecon) has somehow hooked up with one of the youngest hill top Cabs (Hawkshill). This is in fact a very appropriate relationship in wine terms as the older Cab provides a broad spectrum of flavors and just oozes sophistication. Young vines are known for their more focused, tiny, flavor-packed berries and often foreshadow how good a vineyard will be in ten to fifteen years time. The combination gives the best of both worlds; brightness, structure, ageability, complexity, and of course Brecon’s signature mouthfeel. Even the oak framework is multi-layered and suitably intriguing.
