2015 Brecon Cabernet Franc

When you have Paso’s oldest Cabernet Franc vineyard, there is little point in running around trying to find an alternate with greater tannin or color intensity. You would be sorely missing the point.  The old vines have way more complexity. Try closing your eyes as you imbibe! We, by default, have a duty of care to showcase the complexity emanating from these venerable old vines.

2015 Brecon Late Harvest Zinfandel

White or black pepper, spice and berry jamminess. All fantastic Zinfandel descriptors. With the extra hang time of a late harvest there is a tendency for the descriptors to move to the right in the above spectrum. However not here. Brecon has deftly managed to retain the zinfandels signature pepper and spice in this luscious dessert wine. Three Zin Clones.

2015 Brecon Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

“Stock up and ferret away”! (Yes, it's an English-ism) as any self respecting small white weasel, that can run up your trouser leg, can tell you. “Why”? I can hear you ask. Well, a little dicky-bird let slip that there will be no Brecon Reserve Cab in 2016. This is indeed a good sign;  it shows that Brecon is committed to only releasing reserve offerings when the vintage is truly exceptional. However, like any good prepper, make sure you have enough squirreled away!

2015 Brecon Reserve Petite Sirah

Just a morsel, a dash, a pinch, or a drop in the bucket or, as a dinky di Australian would say, we made absolutely “Bugger All” (just seven barrels!); it’s quintessentially the dog’s bollocks (in the “when it comes to Italian opera, Pavarotti is the dog's bollocks” sense of the word.). P.S. The B word is apparently not in the US dictionary so perhaps we can get away with it here. The sex pistols did!

2016 Brecon Albarino

Brits are best known for the Barmy Army, Monty Python, Mad dogs and Englishmen. Hummmm seems to be a trend here. So it was no surprise that Brecon was initially considered Barking Mad for hanging their hats on an Albarino as one of their signature wines. After scoring 96 points twice in two days in 2015. The method to their madness has become quite clear.

Even in Portugal/Northern Spain the best examples of these wonderfully crisp yet aromatic food wines come from within a couple of miles of the coast.  In California, marine fogs cool the grapes, resulting in a long ripening period, super intense flavors and aromatics. The tropical complexity/richness was so intense in 2016 we deftly melded in around 10% Albariño from other ranches to ensure the varietally correct citrine characters were suitably enhanced.

2016 Brecon Grenache Blanc

Wrote this in more of a “captain sensible” kind of day so here goes. The majority (~72%) of this Grenache Blanc is sourced from head trained vines. This is, in itself, somewhat unusual/special, particularly in the veritable wind tunnel of the Templeton Gap. The balance abuts Hoffman Mountain Ranch (Paso’s oldest Pinot 1964). It was a somewhat gritty wine when young, hence released post summer, but like the proverbial ugly duckling this wine has blossomed into something quite………….

2016 Brecon True Acacia Head Albarino

A single vineyard Albarino in disguise, (Read we forgot to put it in on the label). Actually consists of two of the three available clones from the oldest serious planting of Albarino. (Jack Ranch) in the Edna valley.  Those pesky little winemakers at Brecon, ferment exclusively in Oak barrels with Acacia heads. Acacia can enhance floral notes and structure without adding vanilla the toasty notes associated with a Quercus species. Think white peach overtones with an underlying Zesty grapefruit. 100% Albarino, 100% 2016, 95% Jack Ranch, 5% Derby Vyd.

By the way, there are around 800 known species of true acacia. The Acacia used in barrels is not one of them. We just liked the name.

2016 Brecon Viognier/Grenache Blanc

This simple 50/50 blend wholly from Adelaida belies the three vineyard and multiple cooperage complexity in this wine. Derived from two super aromatic sundrenched blocks, plus a later ripening more shaded block. Which gives it a lighter fresher more approachable side. In time expect stone fruit flavors to dominate, such as nectarines and peaches, while clean citrus characters shine through on the finish.
