2022 Brecon Mourvedre (Single Vineyard Series)
The whole raison d’etre of a single vineyard offering is to highlight a particular vineyard that is the epitome of a particular region or is highly individualistic. This one falls “square peg in a round hole” in the latter camp. It's a lesser known clone planted in an unusual cooler spot and harvests so late that the holidays and Santa are clearly in its sights. The resulting wines are among the most interesting, bright, lively, expressions of a structured Mourvedre you will see. It does not feel kinship with other Paso Robles Mourvedres and is better showcased on its own.
Production notes
Brecon’s winemaking generally aims to emphasize the opulent primary fruit with intense earthy/smoky bacon undertones Paso Mourvedre is rightly known for. With such cool climate fruit we have to adapt. Whole cluster ferments become the norm, not just a blending component. This adds a framing structure. We are also guilty of extensively using cold soaking for mouthfeel. Even then the resultant wine is a late bloomer, takes time to mature, hence the ten months bottle age prior to release.

Moonsprings is a new planting high on the southern edge of the somewhat wind-blown Templeton Gap sub district. We had predicted, in time, this would morph into a single vineyard offering. Indeed it did, however when you farm on the edge, mother nature can throw occasional curveballs and sadly there was no crop in the following vintage.
