2020 Brecon Albarino

Bowl you over with a feather kind of wine. Most folks just never see it coming, even knocks those red wine only aficionados of their lofty perch! This is the pure expression of the vineyard that started Brecon on its wildly successful Albariño ride. Aromatic as ever, it veritably jumps from the glass with hints of Sauvignon Blanc and day lily blossom (that edible flower). Being varietally true it's all citreen, with crisp fresh limes dominating the palate. So refreshing, yet the finish is surprisingly rich with a softness and biscuity toastiness reminiscent of a classic champagne.

2020 Brecon True Acacia Head Albarino

A truly new world Albarino. Luscious, rich, mouthwatering, with aromatics reminiscent of a Coastal Sauvignon Blanc. Now perhaps these are somewhat rarer descriptors for an Albarino, but a wonderful example of what happens when we customize the wine by fermenting in Acacia. By ‘pimping it’s ride’ so to speak, with this unusual barrel we bring elegant white peach and nectarine fruit nuances while adding a little structure/richness in the mid palate. All without those sometimes pesky toasty or vanilla influences associated with traditional Oak Barrels.

2020 Brecon Last Sandwich

Don't be fooled if you Google it. There is a rock climbing route and a horror short of the same name but the true inspiration is some impressive discoveries made in a Welsh underground labyrinth by our canny winemaker and friends. Munching on their last sandwich of the day they spied an obscure new way on. Ironically this blend came about in much the same way. They had tried blending this rich, aromatic Viognier and citrusy Albarino every which way. Finally hitting upon blending them together while devouring the last chicken tikka panini. Equally ironically, and possibly unsurprisingly, it pairs remarkably well with the spicier summer salads, sandwiches and paninis.

2020 Brecon Rose (New Release)

We'll drink a drink, a drink

To Lily the Pink, the Pink, the Pink

The savior of the human race

For she invented medicinal compound

Most efficacious in every case…

If you have even a little bit of the luck of the Irish in you, you’ll appreciate those lyrics. Topped the UK Charts in 68. While no medical claims are made, how good would it be if we could save all our 2021 ailments with a lovely drop of refreshing Rosé. Some might say eminently refreshing, with white cherry and raspberries, and an almost provencal lemon thyme savory after note. Reminiscent of the best salmon pink bandol dry Rosé’s.

2017 Brecon Cabernet/Petit Verdot

When in barrel, the most apt descriptor I heard was- to quote a rather loud bonnie lass, “it’s a weee little beastie that”. Strangely that’s exactly what we strived for in a young bordeaux. However I suspect we will need to give this 8-9 months bottle age prior to release to get this supple enough for those Southern Softie Sassenachs that occasionally frequent these parts. Now don’t get me wrong, with the underlying smoothness of 50% “ye olde vine” Brecon Cabernet and the opulent dark forest fruit from the Petit Verdot. We suspect this will meld into something remarkably long lived.

2017 Brecon Meritage

We suppose imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Brecon has actually had to go all inky dark on you regarding our vineyard sourcing. Our English winemaker is feeling “A little miffed” bordering on “It’s a bit pesky” due to a spate of attempted vineyard contract thefts. BTW, the last time the British collectively had such a feeling was in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out during the blitz. Either way the majority of grapes are from Brecon old vines. Meaning it has our signature broad spectrum of flavors including, ironically, a subtle hint of Assam from the Cab Franc. The forest and earthy aroma interplay between varietals is very nuanced again a Brecon Meritage hallmark.

2017 Brecon Syrah/Tannat

Strangely a “Furlong Firkin Fortnight” is pretty close to a case of wine! This humorous, nerdy system based on old fashioned impractical units illustrates the difficulty in finding suitable language to describe this little beauty. It is probably best to think of it as a Crossfit Syrah. There is a certain firmness of tone, a more solid well kept frame if you like. A definite inner confidence, head held high kind of wine that comes from a little maturity and a defined six pack.

2018 Brecon Cab Franc

This full bodied Franc is definitely something you want to curl up with at the end of the night (we’re talking about a well deserved glass at the end of a long day...what were you thinking?) The 2018 is actually a clonal trial from a few local properties. These modern clones have a little bit more structure and some pretty intense forest fruit flavours compared to our mild mannered old crooner clone at Brecon. Consider this then, the younger siblings desperately trying to out compete with their overachieving relative.

2018 Brecon Forty-Two (Red Rhone Blend)

What is the meaning of Man? Whence did he come? Whither does he go? Curiously the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, from which this 42 gets inspiration tried to answer this exact question ie “the answer to life, the universe and everything”. While waiting for the answer, it might take eons to elucidate by the way...why not delve into this soft, velvety smooth veritable bowl of forest fruits? You might even come up smelling of Petunias. Oh no not again!

2018 Brecon Grenache Adelaida (< 100 bottles left)

"Oakley Doaky. Stop your lollygagging and get your laughing gear round this liddle beauty". Apologies, our winemaker often needs a translator between his native Queen's English and the  apparently bar stewardised US version! I suspect what he is trying to politely say is stop hanging about and taste this little gem. It has a fantastic smoaky oaky framework. Laughing gear is apparently a common colloquialism for mouth in the UK. Perhaps you worked that out already. Ironically it's best served at a very tepid British summer temperature, let's say a generous mid 60's. Over this side of the pond it's the perfect accompaniment for that quintessentially American Thanksgiving bird. We suspect the Queen would be rather unamused.

2018 Brecon Malbec (<100 bottles left)

Ello, Ello. Ello, What's all this then? Likely story. Our first ever Malbec! It’s been strangely absent from recent Brecon mythology, but there are plenty of parallels to similarly lively, burly, outlaw esque characters with a wild wooly side in its rich heritage of magical and mystical tales. In Welsh (a very lyrical language) a wine such as this, that just sings from the glass, would surely be honoured by many a famous bard and writer.

2018 Brecon Petite Sirah (New Release)

I met a jolly larrikin in the mirror this morning. Not spied him for... well I don’t remember how long really. It was that fun fellow with the child in his eyes. Reminded me distinctly of this little drop. Rich and mature with a refined cigar box persona, but with that distinct Peter Pan never grows old brightness and vitality. I believe we last partied on his barn roof being spellbound by velky vuz (the big dipper in Czech,) and that, I suspect, is its perfect pairing. A barn roof, a warm blankie and clear starlit night. BTW, the Surgeon General (maverick that he is not) probably advises against barn roofs, gravity and full bodied Petite Sirah!

2018 Brecon Petit Verdot (Club Only)

Like the lumen sucking darkness I once immersed myself in a lava cave in Iceland. Darkness you can absolutely chew on. OK perhaps the chewy bit might be related to the wonderfully ripe tannins from this single vineyard expression. Amazingly, sunny Paso Robles can take some of these lesser known varieties to new dizzying heights. Bright velvety fruit, bags of varietal character, fantastic structure and excellent mid palate fruit weight. No need to go Icelandic volcano watching to warm your tootsies. This Petit Verdot pairs perfectly with any mildy chilly or blustery evening.

2018 Brecon Reserve Syrah (<200 bottles left)

Surprisingly, tasting a great wine can be remarkably like walking a mischievous pedigree hound! Heresy, maybe, but hear me out. As you saunter your way down the bottle, complex berry, meaty and toasty oak nuances sometimes trot obediently by your taste buds side, at other times they jump right out at you and sometimes they just disappear into a denser thicket of brambly-like things. Comfortingly, you know they are never far away. Great wines should always have that similar connection, and give a different nuance with every step. At the end of the tasting path there might just be a glimmer of an earthy earth tones!

2018 Brecon Sauret Clone Zin (New Release)

A three dog night, warm your cockles kind of wine. (Cochlea =Latin for ventricles of your heart and there we were thinking we were using cockney rhyming slang).  In any event... come to think of it I can't think of an event this wine would not go well with. Kind of like your favorite black dress or a good sausage sizzle goes with any party in Australia. To wrap this up, we have taken it to the max with the other bits and bobs we can sneak into this wine to give it rather overt structure and complexity. However, its beating heart of jammy red fruit and underlying pepper and spice layers still veritably leap from the glass.

2018 Brecon Tannat (New Release)

If this wine was sentient it might perhaps have “A Beautiful Mind”. Intriguingly complex, high brow, multi-layered deep and sometimes oh so dark. Strong in its conviction, although a little fruity and decidedly spicy. To the extent that it borders on being somewhat schizophrenic between the last three, i.e. each time you engage it you might randomly get a slightly different persona. A sure sign of a great vino.

2018 Brecon Zinfandel, Paso Robles

To Muddy the Waters so to speak, we made two remarkably different Zinfandels from the 2018 Vintage (saw him live in St Louis, just brilliant). So, make sure you have picked up the right bottle. This is the foodies choice of the two. Brighter, rather than jammy, with an intriguing spice layer reminiscent of Grandma’s seemingly endless holiday feast (alas me Grandma never saw him live)! It does, however, have some rockstar/cult Zin credentials, organically grown, dry farmed hilltop vineyard, toasty oak framework, and underlying pepper.
